A former coach in East Ottawa, Stanton carved a career with the city of Ottawa and took his first part-time scouting job with the Washington Capitals with an assist from the late Bryan Murray and former Kings’ general manager Sam McMaster. “John had a huge passion for the game of hockey,” Dorion said Thursday. “He’s someone that coached when he was younger, but I only knew him as a scout. He had a huge passion: He wanted to get to the rink early and he wanted to talk to people because he was a people person.
Dorion Sr., the director of player personnel for the Toronto Maple Leafs at the time of his passing, was with the Central Scouting Bureau for a large part of his career. He, and Stanton, spent several hours together in airports and highways scouring the world for good players.
