The Whitecaps’ striker hasn’t scored in his first two games for Vancouver this year — but he didn’t in 2017, either, and still had one of the best offensive campaigns in Caps hist…
When Fredy Montero first joined the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2017, he put up goose eggs in his first three games with the team, leading to the usual overly reactive and hyperbole-prone cadres of disenchanted supporters goose-stepping to B.C. Place.
He promptly scored three goals in his next three games, including a master class brace against his former team, the Sounders. “It’s only two games,” he said. “I arrived two weeks ago; I’m still living at the hotel! So there’s no pressure here.” With the team still struggling to find its legs and passing rhythm, the offensive buildup in the possession style Dos Santos is trying to instil in the squad stalls once it enters the final third. A quick glance at Montero’s heat maps, which track the areas a player operates most in, shows him occupying the centre of the pitch midway between half and the 18-yard box.
Of the 19 key passes — scoring chances off of passes — by the Caps so far this year, Inbeom has led the way, followed by Lass Bangoura and Victor Giro with two. Six other players have one — none of them is named Montero.
