Fortnite opened up season 2 of Chapter 3 with a bit of a surprise
. As part of the storyline of the game, the evil Dr. Sloane has completely eliminated everyone’s ability toIn its place, the game introduced a recharging overshield since you can’t build walls to tank bullets anymore, and introduced new movement mechanics like sprinting and ledge mantling for the first time.
Supposedly this “no build” concept is only supposed to last a little under two weeks or so. The storyline of the game will have us crippling Dr. Sloane’s anti-building machines and we’ll get the ability back. And yet the more you play the game this way, the more you may appreciate it, and I have to believe this may be a test for maybe not just a permanent mode, but ways that Epic might want to expand the world of Fortnite as a whole in the future.
While many games have copied Fortnite’s battle royale style gameplay , pretty much no one has bothered to copy building in Fortnite, which involves spamming walls, roofs and ramps to protect yourself and out-fox opponents with complicated structures you can shoot or edit through, in addition to using them for protection.
Everything I’m seeing points to Fortnite erasing building as a big success. Casual players and pros alike seem to like what it’s done to the pacing and combat of the game, and speaking personally, I’m one of those “I like Fortnite but hate ultra-complicated building gameplay” type people, so this is right up my alley.
