A 52-year-old former SANParks official faces charges after allegedly stealing state-owned items, including crime-scene bags and equipment, from a SAPS storeroom in Skukuza. Police are investigating the motive behind the burglary and have not ruled out additional charges.

A 52-year-old former official of SANParks, South Africa's national parks agency, was arrested yesterday in connection with a burglary at the SAPS Stock Theft and Endangered Species units' storeroom in Skukuza on January 23. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli stated that several state-owned items, including crime-scene bags and other equipment, were stolen during the incident. A case was opened following the discovery of the burglary, and an investigation led to the arrest.

According to Lowvelder, police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges as the investigation continues. Mdhluli explained that it is alleged the suspect forced open the storeroom container on the day of the incident and stole various state-owned items used in poaching-related investigations, along with cleaning materials and sets of knives. He added that the storeroom appears to have been broken into twice by the same suspect. Members of the Stock Theft Unit became suspicious when they noticed something odd outside the storeroom and initiated an investigation. During this investigation, they uncovered the burglary and the theft of the items. Mdhluli stated that the suspect allegedly attempted to conceal his actions by returning some of the stolen items, but his efforts proved unsuccessful, and he was ultimately apprehended. The intention and motive behind the burglary will form part of the ongoing police investigation. SANParks confirmed the arrest and revealed that the suspect resigned from his position on Monday. He is expected to appear in court today
