A former college principal in South Africa was found guilty of two counts of fraud and sentenced to a fine or imprisonment after submitting fraudulent travel claims.

Motlagomang Prudence Mathloko, a 43-year-old former college principal, has been sentenced to a R12,000 fine or four years imprisonment by the Taung Regional Court in North West, South Africa. Mathloko was found guilty on two counts of fraud stemming from fraudulent travel claims she submitted between October 2017 and December 2017 while employed at the Taung Agricultural College.

According to Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, Mathloko's claims involved a vehicle that was undergoing repairs at a garage and the utilization of an official vehicle for two trips that she falsely claimed for. Following an investigation initiated in March 2020, Mathloko was arrested and subsequently released on warning. She appeared in court multiple times before being convicted of the fraud charges and handed down the sentence. The court suspended half of the sentence for five years, contingent upon Mathloko not being convicted of fraud during this period. The sentencing has been met with approval from Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, acting head of the Hawks in North West, and Dr Rachel Makhari, the Director of Public Prosecutions in North West. Both commended the law enforcement and prosecution teams for their diligent work on the case. This case follows another recent fraud conviction, where Nachy Britz was sentenced to imprisonment in October by the Brits Magistrate’s Court. Britz defrauded clients of approximately R3.7 million by promising them low-priced luxury vehicles imported from the United States.
