Cape Breton residents flocked to downtown Sydney in the summer of 1959 to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II who was on a royal visit to Canada with her husband Prince Philip. Above, Sydney teen Larry Gaum captured the royal couple as they waved to the adoring crowds. “I put them away and I never looked at them again until a few weeks ago. At the time, I didn’t know what I was getting. I just clicked the shutter but at the same time, I was very aware of the expense of Kodachrome film. So I was very diligent and a little miserly. Today, with a digital camera, I would have fired off hundreds of shots.”Larry Gaum when he was a 15-year-old Sydney schoolboy.

“One day he told us we were going to develop a roll of film and I thought that was something really interesting,” he said. “There was already a large crowd and I tried to get as close as I could. I saw them and shot off a few photos of them coming toward the hotel. Then she went inside, but I knew she would be coming out soon.”
