Satellite image of the"bomb cyclone" system approaching Northern California at 12:30pm. on Jan. 4, 2023.SALINAS, Calif. — On Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 2:30 p.m., the Salinas River reached the"action phase" in the Spreckels area, and according to predictive models from the National Weather Service and the Monterey County Water Resources Agency, the river is expected to reach flood stage at or around 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, and continue through 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15.

An evacuation order remains in effect for areas along the Salinas River from Soledad, southwest of Chualar, to Spreckels and the River Road corridor, and then to the Pacific Ocean. County officials warn that if flooding does occur, these communities could be cut off from essential services. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions to protect life and property as soon as possible.

State and local officials are preparing for the impact of the flooding, including potential road closures and disruptions to essential services. Bridges are expected to withstand the expected flows, but low-lying intersections and local surface streets may be impacted. Roads near the Salinas River that may be affected include State Route 68, River Road, Reservation Road, Blanco Road, multiple secondary roads, and potentially US 1.

Residents both on the peninsula and in the Salinas area should expect to be cut off for two to three days and if they see road closure signs, it is imperative that they do not attempt to traverse those roads. Officials are urging residents to remember the warning,"Turn around, Don't Drown."
