The anthology draws on the continent's rich and diverse histories and cultures to present ten sci-fi and fantasy stories featuring bold and brave new worlds.
More than 70 leading directors and creators across the continent were invited to pitch their ideas. Thirty were shortlisted, and 15 were selected for further development. In June 2021, 10 projects were greenlit for production, and on 5 July, 2023, the 10 films premiered on Disney+.Ramsey says the project gave a group of artists with credits under their belt a chance on a bigger stage for the rest of the world to see what's happening in animation on the continent.
"We were trying to find a way to capture the spirit of what we were trying to do with this project which was to unearth and identify the incredible voices in terms of directing and creative storytellers in Africa, and have them do something super bold in animation, tell us what their versions of the future look like. Inspire the continent. Inspire the world."
"It just started showing up as the films were being made. It just became evident that community is a core value in all of us. Spirituality links us and defines us in very different ways across the films. Women play a significant role. [There was] a lot of shared touch points. It wasn't even deliberate.
