'Carol Doda Topless at the Condor' tells story of girl next door turned SF dancer
Carol Doda is widely known as the first topless dancer in the country who is credited with starting a nationwide sexual revolution in the mid-1960s, but a new documentary “Carol Doda Topless at the Condor," shows another side of Doda, a woman who was not easily manipulated, but rather canny, creative, and, best of all, funny.
Filmmaker Jonathan Parker, best known for 2002's"Bartleby" and 2009's"," met Doda in 1995 long after she left topless dancing and opened a lingerie shop near his family’s real estate business on Union Street.Parker trailed her on her various gigs, singing, or working as an emcee for local functions and getting to know more about her.
"I was reading, going 'what?' 'What is this?' But immediately I thought, 'this is an incredible story, set in an incredible time. She was a brave woman who broke boundaries for what women are supposed to be. It's fun, it's sexy.' We decided to re-open it," says McKenzie. Initially the project was going to be a fictionalized TV series, but after a producer suggested filming interviews with people who knew and worked with Doda,"all of a sudden a documentary was born," says Parker.
