‘Loujain told us she has been beaten, electrocuted and sexually harassed,’ says her brother, who lives in Toronto
Urooba Jamal remembers taking an immediate liking to Loujain al-Hathloul when the two were students at UBC several years ago. Jamal was on the executive of the Pakistani Students’ Association. Al-Hathloul, though she was not Pakistani, was one of the club’s most active volunteers, even helping one year to organize relief efforts during terrible flooding overseas.
“We know that some of the women were charged with promoting women’s rights and calling for the end of the male guardianship system. The women were also charged with contacting international organizations, foreign media and other activists, including their contact with Amnesty International.”Human rights groups have previously called for international monitors to enter the country after accusing Saudi interrogators of torturing some of the women — a claim that Saudi officials have denied.
“We are concerned by the detention of women rights activists, including Loujain al-Hathloul,” the statement said. That view is echoed by Amnesty International Canada, which has called on Canada and other nations to “publicly and privately raise the issue of the jailed women human rights defenders in all their interactions with Saudi officials, and to call for their immediate and unconditional release,” Hansen said.
