Researchers at UBC Okanagan say they’ve made a breakthrough in their quest to make heart surgery safer and less invasive, by creating a synthetic heart valve.

About 10 per cent of seniors over 75 experience so-called mitral regurgitation — blood leaking backwards through a valve — that reduces cardiac output and can be life-threatening, said Dylan Goode, a graduate student researcher at the lab. “It’s risky, sometimes it doesn’t work,” said Mahammadi. Implanting animal tissue in human can cause a number of complications.
