A possible explosion and fire at Kriel Power Station sees Eskom assuaging the public that loadshedding will not return.
A fire engulfed Unit 6 of the Kriel Power Station on Sunday, with an energy expert believing a potential explosion took place.
A major fire has reportedly broken out at Kriel Power Station in Mpumalanga over the weekend and it is likely to have started after an explosion of the power station’s coal-fire generating Unit 6.on X , one of the Mpumalanga power station’s generating units caught fire at 17:30 on Sunday. Damage to the unit seems significant as per videos shared by the user which will likely mean it won’t be able to generate electricity until repairs are made, which may take months or longer.
“This was last night but it was extinguished. It was an oil pipe that burst but all safe now. We are still assessing,” the spokesperson reportedly said. It assured South Africans that the incident “will no impact the current generation capacity or lead to loadshedding” in a media statement.
