A bailiff attended a former church in Lowertown, now home to The United People of Canada (TUPOC), threatening to change the church\u0027s locks

One of the bailiffs who served the notice of termination of tenant claimed TUPOC was late on its rent, didn’t have insurance and was doing construction on a heritage building without permission.

Don returned on Thursday morning and posted a notice of termination of tenant on the church door, but he said TUPOC supporters ripped it off. “Yesterday we had a bailiff come and try to throw around a piece of paper to say that we’re to go,” she said. Komer said the event precipitated due to rising tensions between TUPOC and its landlord after the organization raised concerns about “breaches of the Ontario Human Rights Code by the property owners, including, but not limited to, what we understand to be unlawful reprisal against us for refusing to discriminate against people based on their creed.”Article content

Ottawa police said officers were called to the building at approximately 6:20 p.m. Wednesday because of a dispute between the landlord and tenant. TUPOC supporters at the St. Brigid’s site on Thursday said they had stayed awake most of the night, watching for the bailiff.
