South Africa's state-owned power utility, Eskom, may reintroduce rotational power cuts after a successful 10-month period without load-shedding. Recent breakdowns require extended repairs, prompting Eskom to closely monitor emergency reserves and potentially implement load-shedding up to stage 4 this weekend.
The state-owned power utility has been load-shedding-free for more than ten months, which it attributes to the success of its Generation Recovery Plan .“This is a potentially temporary setback. Load-shedding is largely behind us due to the structural improvements in our generation fleet,” Eskom CEO Dan Marokane said in a statement.
This would be a significant setback for the state-owned power utility, which hasn’t had to implement the rotational power cuts since late March 2024.
