The Greater Toronto Hockey League is investigating allegations of anti-Black and anti-Asian racism that occurred during its most recent game.

In a phone call with the Star, Aliu shared the details of what led up to the slur. It happened September 30, in a game between Humber Valley and Forest Hill. A coach with Humber Valley reached out to Aliu via Instagram private message and, upon reading what happened, Aliu felt he had to respond. “The saddest part is said he was so broken he didn’t retaliate, he just skated off. He didn’t know what to do,” Aliu said.

Aliu is a prominent figure within the push against the anti-Black racism hockey players face in the league. At TIFF this year, he was featured in the, “Black Ice,” which highlighted the Black contributions and innovations within hockey, beginning with the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes.
