The mayor survived his third vote of no confidence, which was tabled by ActionSA, after a meeting of the Ekurhuleni council suddenly adjourned.
JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana will live to see another day in the metro after dodging a vote of no confidence.
This is the third time the vote failed to go ahead after ActionSA brought the vote against Ngodwana, accusing him of running the city to the ground. The motion was already endorsed by the Democratic Alliance, Freedom Front Plus, African Christian Democratic Party, Inkatha Freedom Party, and Patriotic Alliance, leaving only the Economic Freedom Fighters and African Independent Congress to defend the mayor.
However, a sudden late-night adjournment saw Ngodwana walk out of council with the keys to the city yet again. It took about eight hours for the Ekurhuleni council to finally reconvene the second meeting of the day where Ngodwana would learn his fate.Already frustrated by the long delays, several caucus breaks and service delivery protests, proceedings hit another snag when the African National Congress called for an amendment to the motion.
The ANC supported calls for Ngodwana to be axed but said the party with the most seats had to put forward a new mayoral candidate.
