Editorial | Vaccine: The aim is normality

We are still way below where we need to be to meet this target, as at least 17 million people still need to be vaccinated. And with President Cyril Ramaphosa now saying that we are no longer running short of vaccines, that we have enough to cater for the entire adult population, questions must be asked about the snail’s pace of our drive. The truth is that every day there are antivaxxers actively sending out messages on social media, fuelling fear of Covid-19 vaccines.

For some people, refusing vaccination represents taking a stand against government, which is wholly misplaced. For others, there is still fake information about how vaccines kill people, with no evidence to back that up. However, there are also millions of people who are not vaccinating because they are simply uncertain of what the consequences will be.

For them being injected with a Covid-19 vaccine represents importing a foreign object into their body when they do not know what the long-term effects will be. Hence there is a need for more education and sharing of information about how the vaccines have made a difference worldwide in mitigating the impact of the pandemic. The discussions about vaccine passports/certificates therefore arise from a desire to take the country and the world to a more normalised situation where social, recreational and sporting activities can resume. As Health Minister Joe Phaahla said on Friday, the aim is not to exclude people from essential services.

The country desperately needs to go back to normal for full economic activity to return so that more people can be employed. Yes, people’s constitutional rights must not be trampled on, but we can do even better by vaccinating so that we do not endanger those we interact with at all levels of our lives.
