Still, as of July 1, 2023, all the Atlantic provinces except New Brunswick — which has its own approved carbon pricing — will come under the federal carbon tax model currently being followed in the Prairies and Ontario. That’s also why both provincial and federal governments are offering rebate programs for people who make the switch to cleaner transportation and home heating methods.

On the positive side, while we have to pay more at the pumps and at the end of the oil truck hose, the carbon tax is designed to be revenue neutral. That means the federal government will return some — or in a few cases, more — of what you’ve paid out of pocket through quarterly, tax-free, climate action incentive payments, distributed through the Canada Revenue Agency.
