StarEditorialBoard: In their often futile efforts to provide care to their loved ones in LTC homes, family caregivers suffered significant trauma, new research finds. Supporting them isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s the prudent thing, too.

“There were times I came home in tears because I feel like I have PTSD from this last spring.”

Researchers at the University of Toronto and Ontario Tech University recently published two studies examining these experiences, and they found that family caregivers suffered significant trauma in their often futile efforts to provide care to their loved ones. But the visitor restrictions clearly didn’t have the desired effect, as Canada experienced a higher proportion of LTC deaths than any other country in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

We can’t make this mistake again. And given that a pandemic will happen again - or is already happening again - it’s imperative that we ensure family caregivers are always welcome within the LTC system.
