Premier Doug Ford flushed out his development ideas for Ontario Place this week with an announcement to move the Ontario Science Centre to the lakefront to make way for housing.
It’s telling that of the 62 hectares of land at Ontario Place, 17 hectares will be open for public access under Ford’s proposal. If his government has the itch to relocate attractions, why not move the Therme spa and free up even more waterfront space.it was intended to reconnect an area cut off by the Gardiner Expressway to the rest of the city. It was built for the people.
Ford’s latest iteration doesn’t consider the bigger picture — the current value that Ontario Place already has as urban parkland. Long-time park visitors, especially seniors, are concerned their Sunday drive through the park will be cancelled. Even last-minute day trips are becoming a logistical headache as municipalities try to manage the influx of out-of-towners.
If access to natural settings is in short supply now, think what Torontonians can expect in five, 10 or 20 years as the GTA adds another 3.3 million residents.
