StarEditorial: It’s easy to think COVID-19 is behind us. But the risks are there and may be rising. The vaccine announcements are a timely reminder that getting the jab is an easy way to obtain life-saving protection against a stubborn, deadly virus.

There are some new weapons in the fight against COVID-19, just as that fight appears to need a boost.That’s good news for parents keen to have their young children vaccinated. It’s natural they will have questions and want to seek out medical advice. But it’s a welcome development that this age group – some two million children – can get protected.

This despite the ample and compelling evidence that vaccines provide vital protection against COVID-19 exposure, preventing mild symptoms from migrating into serious illness, hospitalization and death. It’s important to know that the immunity you thought you had may no longer be there. As federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos noted, the immunity provided by the first two shots in 2021 has waned.
