A wave of violence across the country this week has prompted the usual platitudes and meaningless thoughts and prayers for the victims.

In Toronto, 16-year-old Gabriel Magalhaes was stabbed to death at a subway station after a night out with his friends. In Vancouver, Paul Schmidt was murdered outside a Starbucks, in front of his fiancee and three-year-old daughter — reportedly for . In Quebec, police Sgt. Maureen Breau was killed making an arrest — the ninth police officer in this country to die in the line of duty since September. Once again, we’re told the causes are complicated and there’s no single answer. We’re told we have to look to the “roots” of the problem. In the long term, we do. Right now, we need fast action that will restore public safety and our sense of security when we travel on transit and walk the streets.Article contentIn many of these cases, the accused had a history of mental illness. That requires us to re-examine how we treat the mentally ill.

We need more law enforcement officers on the streets. A quick way to achieve that would be for police chiefs to examine their programs carefully. Any cops working on non-essential desk jobs should be redeployed to the front lines.
