The government department has confirmed plans for those on older benefits to move over to Universal Credit – here's how it will work

Thousands of people who claim older benefits are to be moved over to Universal Credit four years earlier than expected, the Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed. The government department is currently in the process of writing to claimants who get four government benefits asking them to migrate to Universal Credit from their old legacy-style benefits. And it'll mainly affect people who claim Employment and Support Allowance .

While most people have already made the move over to the newer style benefit, in what's been called a Managed Migration, others are yet to be moved over. The benefit recipients who are affected hadn't been due to move across to Universal Credit until 2028 or 2029 but that has now been brought forward.

When is it happening? Anyone still due to be moved over to Universal Credit should have received a letter at the end of September, which will inform them about what to do next. The DWP is aiming to complete the process by December 2025, so that all legacy benefits will finish by the start of the next financial year.
