The DWP has a new system in place for formally reporting travel plans if you are receiving Universal Credit - and it could affect your payments

Benefit claimants have been issued a stark warning that they risk having their payments halted for breaking the rules about travel abroad. The Department for Work and Pensions has introduced a new system requiring individuals on Universal Credit to officially declare their overseas travel plans.

Universal Credit recipients are being prompted to provide details of "any past, present or future visits" to other countries. For any travel planned in the upcoming 30 days, or that has occurred at any time since their claim began, they need to report the dates, destinations, and reasons for travel to the DWP.

Failure to meet these conditions will result in the Universal Credit payment being suspended on the next payment date, although usually the claim itself remains active, eliminating the need for reapplication. However, BirminghamLive's Cost of Living Facebook group has seen instances where extended overseas stays without notice have led to claims being closed.

Different benefits come with their own travel regulations. While income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, which is currently being replaced by Universal Credit, cannot be claimed abroad, New Style Jobseeker's Allowance can be claimed in the European Economic Area or Switzerland for up to three months if you're seeking employment.

Those claiming Personal Independence Payment , Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance must inform the DWP if they plan to be away for more than four weeks. Generally, these disability benefits can continue to be claimed for up to 13 weeks while abroad, or twice that duration if the trip is for medical treatment.
