Freezing temperatures in the north of England have triggered the first Cold Weather Payments of the season
Some households could be in line for a £25 one-off payment to help with energy costs as the UK experiences its first major cold snap of the season.
Each year, between November and March, the Department of Work and Pensions runs the Cold Weather Payment scheme to help people on certain benefits with heating costs. Every time the temperature drops below 0C for seven consecutive days, people in affected postcode areas will receive a one-off £25 payment in their bank account. To be eligible for the payments, you need to be claiming a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit, Income Support or Universal Credit.
