The Department of Transport has initiated a road safety campaign for the 2024 festive season. Barbara Creecy, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, emphasized stringent measures to prevent fatalities on identified priority routes, including continuous 24/7 traffic policing and strict enforcement of road laws.
The Department of Transport (DoT) has launched the 2024 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, aimed at making roads safer during the holiday period. Barbara Creecy, Minister of the Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, officially initiated this campaign. She highlighted that 20 priority routes, known for a high incidence of fatal crashes, will be closely monitored throughout the festive season .
Traffic policing will be continuous and rigorous, with a strict enforcement of road laws to prevent accidents. Drivers will be subject to thorough vehicle inspections and random alcohol testing. In 2023, the country witnessed 10,180 fatal crashes, resulting in 11,883 deaths, with 1,285 fatalities occurring during the festive season alone
