Doug Doucet, left, president and founder of Doucet Developments who is originally from Westmount, and Chris Baldwin, the firm's CFO, speak during a presentation before CBRM council on Tuesday night. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY, N.S. — Development of the Sydney waterfront appears to have attracted a new interested party.
For anyone travelling between the CBRM and Halifax Regional Municipality, perhaps the most recognizable property involving Doucet’s firm is the Microtel Inn & Suites in Antigonish, located just off Trans-Canada Highway 104 near St. Francis Xavier University. Phase II of construction would span two years — pending acquisition of a small land area, while the final phase would see a 450-car parking garage, a pair of buildings ranging from five to 10 levels, at 270 units, plus a “mix of commercial and residential uses will hide the parking structure,” according to the firm’s plans.Residential an absolute component
No dollar figures were placed on Doucet’s development plans at this stage. The plans do mention “exact phasing … will depend on the economy, construction costs and the rental market.”The property was previously under an exclusivity agreement with real estate developer Marty Chernin, whose Harbour Royale Development Ltd. for years had looked at building a mixed-use complex that also included a potential new central library.
No vote took place, she said, and both presentations were done via in-camera sessions — meaning behind closed doors — “which is absolutely accepted” under the Municipal Government Act, she added.
