A new sex education platform is aiming to remove stigmas surrounding youth's curiosity. Janice Phiri tells us more about the WhatsApp bot that is empowering the youth.
Sex and reproductive education in South Africa still has a long way to go, as the numbers of teen pregnancies remain consistent and STIs continue to spread. It’s clear that something needs to be done to ensure that our youth can learn about sex and sexual health.
The South African-based WhatsApp platform is the first of its kind under YAL. Designed to be interactive, the platform will empower young people by giving them the right tools, in the hopes that they will be able to curb the high number of teen pregnancies, STIs and HIV infections. Growing up in conservative and traditional communities often means that questions about sex allude to the idea that you are recklessly participating in it. These old values become the foundations of problems, which could have been avoided had the space been made. Shame follows the lives of young people, who are naturally curious about their bodies and desires.
