The North West department of health has launched an investigation following incidents of nurses placing newborn babies in cardboard boxes instead of incubators last Saturday
These pictures of babies in the hospital's neonatal unit being kept in cardboard boxes were shared on social media, prompting an investigation..
Departmental spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane said the MEC and the entire department learnt with shock that newborn babies in the neonatal section were placed in boxes instead of incubators or crib beds at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital.Lekgethwane said the Health MEC, Madoda Samantha, has, therefore, launched an investigation into the matter.
Lekgethwane added the department took this matter in a serious light because there were systems and procedures in place, which should have guided the hospital on a solution if there were any challenges of shortage of incubators at the time. These pictures of babies in the hospital's neonatal unit being kept in cardboard boxes were shared on social media, prompting an investigation.“There are also management meetings that are held every Monday morning, which normally look into the weekend reports. Yet, this incident was never reported.”The department will institute a further investigation to establish how much time was spent by these babies on these boxes.
Sambatha also said that as a matter of urgency, arrangements were being made for additional cribs to be immediately sent to the hospital from another facility that had more.“The CEO is following up on the procurement process, which is under way, in the hospital for additional incubators and cribs. The department unreservedly apologises for this incident and calls for calm while the matter is being investigated,” said the MEC.In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
