The race is down to two. And the map and math look bad for Bernie Sanders
Nicknamed Mini Tuesday, Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primaries in six far-flung states — Michigan, Washington, Mississippi, Missouri, Idaho and North Dakota — are expected to damage Sanders' dimming hopes of capturing the nomination. A result that even approaches last week's Super Tuesday, when Joe Biden won 10 of 14 states, would likely doom Sanders' chances.
From a symbolic standpoint, Mini Tuesday is about two states: Michigan and Washington. Michigan is the place where Sanders scored an upset over Hillary Clinton in 2016, making the race more competitive that insiders had thought. Michigan then went for Donald Trump by less than a quarter point. “Biden is going to win in Detroit and in the rural areas and the suburban areas,” Grebner said. “There’s no place left for Bernie to hide.”to tread lightlyEstablishment Democrats rallied around Biden after rout in South Carolina. Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar quit and endorsed Biden before Super Tuesday. Mike Bloomberg followed suit after that primary. Elizabeth Warren also quit but has declined to endorse, a decision felt more by Sanders than Biden.
“This contest has whipsawed, it has been a roller coaster,” Sroka said, predicting a change in Sanders’ favor after a strong debate performance. “Michigan primary polls have been wrong before. They were wrong in 2016.” A Florida-based strategist, Schale is confident Biden will win Florida on March 17, and could win the other three states that vote on that day: Ohio, Illinois and Arizona. In all, 577 delegates are at stake then. If that happens, Schale said, Biden would be in a stronger position in mid-March than Clinton was at the same point in 2016.
