People who rely on public transit to get around the city are expressing their growing exasperation with the undependable system

Her car was in the garage, so she decided to take what she expected would be a 25-minute LRT train from St. Laurent Shopping Centre, which instead turned into a crowded bus ride lasting more than an hour. She was late for her meeting, prompting the client to say, “Thanks, but no thanks.
“I should have taken a taxi,” she said, a fare that would have cost her about $50. The next time her car is in the garage, she added, she’ll consider renting another, rather than relying on public transit.Article content This week’s LRT shutdown feels like an inflection point in Ottawans’ relationship with their transit system. It might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back, if only the camel had other options to get around. Many transit riders don’t, and when I visited the Tunney’s Pasture station on Wednesday, it didn’t take long to find riders willing to share their frustrations.
Riders like Mark Avon, for example, who said that for the past month he’s simply planned to take buses to his work, near St. Laurent, rather than wait for the inconvenience of the next LRT breakdown. “It’s happening all the time,” he said. “If it isn’t one thing, it’s another.
