It makes sense that an early battle over AI is taking place in Hollywood. But what\u0027s at stake reaches much further than that.

That’s the butterfly effect version of how the strike by the roughly 11,500 members of the Writers’ Guild of America, which for the past two-and-a-half months has been slowing and shuttering film productions, is being felt everywhere movies are made, including Ottawa.

It’s not surprising that labour negotiations surrounding AI would arise in the film industry ahead of other businesses. “It’s good that this discussion is happening, because AI needs to be regulated,” said Ottawa Film Commissioner Sandrine Pechels de Saint Sardos. “We need to know where we’re going with it, and ensure that our talent, our crews, the producers, everybody is well protected. For sure there are some benefits to AI, but it needs to be regulated.”Article content

Meanwhile, according to SAG-AFTRA executive director and negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, producers are proposing that background actors — extras — could be scanned and paid for one day’s work, and their likeness then subsequently used, in perpetuity and without further compensation, for any purpose a production company sees fit.
