The Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industry Recovery Task Force found in March 2020 that 2,600 jobs in the province’s oil and gas sector had disappeared between 2019 and 2020 — a strong indication that government, labour and industry must work together to enhance local engagement and benefits from offshore oil and gas projects.

Newfoundland and Labrador has the capacity and skilled workers to build essential components for Bay du Nord, and the track record to prove it. On the Terra Nova and SeaRose FPSOs, 70 per cent and more than 90 per cent of the topsides work, respectively, were completed here in the province, as well as the hookup and commissioning on both projects.

Maximizing work opportunities for this project will help maintain and grow opportunities for skilled trades workers, ensuring the province can continue to produce the workforce it needs and build the infrastructure required for green technologies in the near future — such as wind and hydrogen — to meet its net-zero targets. It offers exciting opportunities for our skilled trades workforce, and for others who are looking to enter the skilled trades.

Our highly skilled workforce has a record of high productivity and exemplary safety throughout past resource development projects, including the current West White Rose project . We must lobby and negotiate hard and fair, settling for nothing short of construction, supply and service sector jobs on the subsea work, topsides fabrication/installation and commissioning for the project to be completed in Newfoundland and Labrador.
