Danny Austin's 10 Takeaways from Stampeders' loss to Bombers CFL

Article content

As QB Bo Levi Mitchell rightfully pointed out, there’s a lot that can be learned from a game like the one they lost on Saturday night. That is worth celebrating, and anyone who understands the challenges in the Calgary market will recognize that. Season-ticket sales are down significantly the last couple of years. The business people behind the scenes are working hard to reverse that trend for 2023, but realistically, it’s going to take time. The Stamps now have data on around 4,000 extra fans who came through the door. Those are people they can learn about, engage and, hopefully, get back to the stadium many more times.

“They had so many second-and-longs, and we gave up those conversions,” Thurman said. “It cost us this game, it’s that simple. We need to get off the field on second down.”Article content But if the Stamps want to beat the Bombers, yeah, that’s something they’re going to need to figure out.Article contentIt is objectively true that the Stampeders paid the price for not getting in the endzone and settling for four field-goals and no touchdowns in the first half. That cost them, plain and simple.

Let’s also remember that against non-Stampeders opponents, the Bombers have allowed an average of 15.8 points-per-game this season. The Stamps put 28 on the board. It was a solid offensive performance. There are a lot of good running backs in the CFL right now, and that should be celebrated. It’s completely reasonable if fans of other teams want to argue that their guy is best in the league. The debate is good for everybody.

It’s impossible to ignore that it happened, though, and if the Bombers get their running game going at the same time as their passing game? Look out.In the fourth quarter, both Sean McEwen and Tre Roberson were forced out of the game with injuries. Ultimately, we’ll just have to see at practice if either player is available, but it’s absolutely something that will need to be monitored closely heading forward. He was pretty clear that the Stamps need to get better on the big plays that can deflate an opponent.

The Stamps played smart, conservative, turnover-free football. I’m no football coach and don’t pretend to be, but that seemed like the right call. It got them oh-so-close. Did it seem like the DBs had a tough day? Yes. Do I know for sure that the four touchdowns the Stamps allowed through the air were the DBs’ fault? I absolutely do not know that.
