In 2014, at the helm of the Wildrose, Smith led a floor-crossing of MLAs to then-premier Jim Prentice’s Progressive Conservatives — a move many have blamed for the NDP’s 2015 election win over the PCs. Since launching her UCP leadership campaign, Smith has been contrite, saying she made “crucial errors of judgment,” but that she remains friends with her former legislature colleagues.
While Smith has promised collaboration with caucus members, saying many ministers sitting under Kenney would remain in her cabinet, she has also threatened to reopen controversial riding nominations if contestants believe they were disqualified unfairly.disqualified from challenging the Rimbey-Rockey Mountain House-Sundre riding nomination, a district currently held by Nixon.
Almost 124,000 ballots have been distributed to UCP members for the contest, with the results to be announced on Thursday in Calgary.
