Creating authentic content had brands coming to Bafana Mthembu
Content creator Bafana"Eezy Nkabi" Mthembu is not just a handsome gentleman creating as’gqoke content on social media as there is a deeper meaning behind what he does.
“In most cases, you find people in disadvantaged areas dressed good, however, you’d be shocked to find out where they come from, and there would be questions. The narrative that we led was that we didn’t want to look like our problems, but how we would wish to look when we get older,” said Mthembu.He added that when the group split, he still had the desire to tell stories through fashion, so he took a break to find himself.
So Mthembu did the same using comedian Skhumba’s clips to buy himself time as he thought of a way forward, between 2016 and 2018.After a while, his famous as’gqoke was birthed inspired by famous “get ready with me” social media videos. Though he had been creating fashion content, he became famous for it in early 2022, when people would engage and share it more than often.
Among other subcultures, Mthembu identified izikhothane, amapantsula and amabhinca to represent in his videos and give them a spotlight.The Soweto born and bred creator, who is also a brand strategist for DNA Brand Architects, has since worked with brands that align with him such as L'Oréal, Spotify and Puma.
