Bafana Bafana could have a new striker after Dutch-born footballer Simon Van Duivenbooden switched allegiance from the Netherlands to South Africa.
The 22-year-old striker is now eligible to represent South Africa. Van Duivenbooden’s father was born in South Africa which makes him eligible to play for the Netherlands and Bafana Bafana. According to, the former PSV academy player has now officially received his South African passport and identity documents.
“I want to play for South Africa and I will work hard this season to get the attention of the national team coaches,” he concluded. If Van Duivenbooden plays for Bafana, he won’t be the first Dutch-born striker to play for Bafana Bafana. Lars Veldwijk represented South Africa seven times thanks to his paternal lineage.
Simon Van Duivenbooden scored 34 goals in 64 development squad games before his promotion to the first team. He is currently signed with Vitesse where he scored just once in 11 matches. The striker’s availability will now provide Bafana coach Broos with more options upfront.
