No one in the Dallas organization is foolish enough to overreact to one game. There’s a long way to go before the Cowboys can fulfill the Carpe Omnia phrase (Se...
“We feel good about the way we played tonight,” head coach Mike McCarthy said. “We know where we want to go. I feel like we’re fully capable and have an understanding of how to get there. Is Cowboys’ defense really as good as it looked vs. Giants? Early returns say yes
Let’s face it. There’s a reason the Cowboys’ regular-season success the past two years is too quickly dismissed. When a franchise has gone 27 years without advancing past the divisional round of the playoffs, the number of skeptics grows with each passing year. That’s reasonable. Dallas can do nothing to alter that perception until the postseason arrives. But the groundwork to be taken seriously or to have a legitimate shot at the title is laid during the regular season.
Again, it’s only one game. No one is dismissing the Super Bowl chances of the Chiefs because they lost the opener or Cincinnati, which was offensively inept in losing to Cleveland. That’s the odd spot the Cowboys find themselves in due to decades of playoff failures. Every regular-season loss is taken as confirmation that this team won’t advance in the playoffs again. Every regular-season win is treated with skepticism or the attitude that none of this matters until January. That’s why the Cowboys haven’t been taken as seriously as they should as legitimate Super Bowl contenders heading into this season. The Cowboys are coming off back-to-back 12-5 seasons.
In fact, McCarthy had yet to win an opener as the team’s head coach. A Dallas team that hung 40 points on the scoreboard here had scraped together a total of just 49 points in its previous three openers under McCarthy.
