Let’s face it. There’s a reason the Cowboys’ regular season success the past two years is too quickly dismissed. When a franchise has gone 27 years without advancing past the divisional round of the playoffs, the number of skeptics grows with each passing year.That’s reasonable. Dallas can do nothing to alter that perception until the postseason arrives.But the groundwork to be taken seriously or to have a legitimate shot at the title is laid during the regular season.
The Cowboys are coming off back-to-back 12-5 seasons. They’ve done that even though they lost the opener both seasons. In fact, McCarthy had yet to win an opener as the team’s head coach. A Dallas team that hung 40 points on the scoreboard here had scraped together a total of just 49 points in their previous three openers under McCarthy.
