THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s city council has significantly trimmed a large proposed tax levy increase through staffing and service cuts, though exactly where those cuts will fall hasn't yet been determined.
Meanwhile, council narrowly voted against asking the Thunder Bay Police Service and police services board to consider reducing their asks for nearly $4 million in new spending, the single largest cause of this year's tax increase. The draft budget proposed by administration had included a 6.2 per cent increase before growth, while the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce called on council to bring that down to three per cent.
City manager Norm Gale suggested the staffing cut could result in the termination of about seven current employees.
