A cougar has been euthanized after a boy was attacked in the Rocky Mountain House area on Sunday.
In a statement Tuesday, Insp. Rob Kohut with Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services said officers were made aware of the attack on the child Sunday morning. The attack occurred along the Baptiste River in the Rocky Mountain House area, about 250 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
An area located from where the Baptiste River flows into the North Saskatchewan River upstream to the bridge was closed off and reopened on Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for STARS air ambulance confirmed a crew was dispatched to the area following the attack. The child was in stable condition when he arrived at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
“If a cougar is hissing and snarling or staring intently and tracking your movements, do not run, and do not play dead. Make yourself look big and speak loudly. If the cougar makes contact, fight back and don’t give up. Use all means at your disposal.”
