Most reactions suggest substances laced with opioids
Nova Scotia Health says that since Dec. 31 there have been four cases of people having unexpected reactions to ingestions of drugs, with three of those reactions suggesting that the drug they were using was contaminated with opioids. - RF StockNova Scotia Health issued a warning about tainted or contaminated drugs Tuesday, the third alert in seven days covering four incidents since New Year’s Eve.
Jan. 4: A substance sold as a hallucinogenic in the Halifax region resulted in symptoms similar to an opioid drug poisoning. Within two to three minutes of using the drug, individuals experienced drowsiness and were nodding off. The drug was snorted and described as a pink powder. In the recent cases, the contact was from community organizations. Percival-Paterson said she didn’t know if any of the people involved were hospitalized.
“When an opioid drug poisoning occurs, essentially the brain becomes too sedated and isn’t able to co-ordinate some of the key things and functions people need like breathing.” Individuals must complete 20-minute basic naloxone administration training before receiving a kit, although they aren’t able to administer it to themselves.
