Public fury over forthcoming rail fare increases threatens to boil over into a commuter boycott.
The cap applies to fares that are regulated by the Government – around 45 per cent in total. These include most season tickets on commuter routes, some off-peak return tickets on long-distance journeys, and flexible “Anytime” tickets for travel around major cities. Announcing the price rise, the Department for Transport attempted to bill it as a positive move, stressing that it was a below-inflation increase, and hailing its own efforts to “keep rail fares down”.“We are all on our knees with the cost of living as it is,” said one critic, Kelly Wilson, on Facebook.
