It has been nearly three years since law firm McCarthy Tetrault moved into an open-concept, transparent glass, “democratized” office space in downtown Vancouver.
The space demonstrates how more can be done with less in today’s office environment. McCarthy Tetrault’s footprint was slashed by a third, with major cuts to private office space, while overall common space has increased. The firm has the same number of staff, but now occupies a third less space on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th floors of the five-year-old building.
“The design concept is to free up the perimeter,” Milelli said. “There are no offices on the perimeter. All the lawyers are in what we call pavilions. They’re glass offices and they’re scattered throughout. Most of the assistants, paralegals and some articling students will be in what we call workstations, which are out on the floor, but everyone has got access to light.”
