The Columbus Crew seemed fated to settle for a disappointing road draw. Then Lucas Zelarayan took a shot from 63 yards out vs. the Chicago Fire.
It was Zelarayan’s fourth goal of the season. He had scored from 56 yards last year against Charlotte, but he said this was his longest goal ever.
At that point, it seemed as if the Crew would leave with an unsatisfying tie. Chicago entered the game in a tailspin. The Fire dismissed its coach a month ago and was on a five-game winless streak. The closest the Crew came to scoring came on a fluky play. Yaw Yeboah attempted a pass that deflected off a Chicago player and almost dropped behind Richey, but the ball landed on top of the net.
