The non-profit, which runs a meals on wheels program for seniors in the area, will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday for people who want to get out of the cold, from either the outside or their draughty, underheated homes."It's a Band-Aid solution," said executive director Patti McDonald.

Along with board games and cards, there is a sitting area with a television where people can watch shows or movies. There will also be chicken soup, rolls and sweets for people to eat for free thanks to a donation from Sweet Side of the Moon bakery and cafe."We'll only be able to be open during daylight hours. We aren't set up to do overnight stays at the moment, unfortunately."

As of Friday lunchtime, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality had no plans to open any warming centres. Communications spokesperson Christina Lamey said the emergency management office is ready to open the comfort centres if the power goes out. Executive director Christine Porter said they expect as many as six people will need to use their centre overnight and are staying open from Friday to Sunday at 4 p.m.The Red Cross has brought cots to the centre for people to sleep on and the Salvation Army is bringing them hot drinks and sandwiches.
