Ursula Rhys-Gulliver of the Colchester Heritage Rug Hookers shows a recently discovered auxiliary cookbook from 1922, while president Debbie Mellish looks on. - Chelsey Gould A common source of sentiment among visitors over the years has been the scrumptious food offered – cakes, donuts, cookies, penny candy, fudge, coffee were cited, though some of the more sugary items are no longer served. The favourite staple sandwiches offered are from Kennedy’s Variety and Deli in Bible Hill.
“When you go downstairs, if you have someone in hospital, and you see a friendly face and a smiling greeting, I've got to tell you that that is absolutely wonderful – along with the terrific sandwiches and homemade cookies that you can usually smell as soon as you get off the elevator,” said Blair. “But that brief period, whether it's five minutes or whether it's 30 minutes, is a brief respite for those people who have family members or friends who are sick in hospital.
