, director-general in the national Water and Sanitation Department, examines three interrelated factors that resulted in the recent water outages in Johannesburg, and whether these outages will now become the norm.
Water is much more localised than electricity – there are approximately a thousand different water supply systems in South Africa, whereas there is only one national electricity grid. The reasons for water supply disruptions vary between different local water supply systems. Raw water supply is currently approximately in balance with existing demands on a national scale, but there are localised deficits in the supply of raw water.
