Gerald Coetzee's return to the Proteas squad was short-lived as he was withdrawn hours after being named for the tri-nation series against Pakistan and New Zealand due to a recurring hamstring injury.
Gerald Coetzee has been surprisingly removed from the South African Proteas squad for the upcoming tri-nation series against Pakistan and New Zealand , just hours after his initial inclusion. Coetzee's return to the team was highly anticipated as he recovered from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for most of the recent SA20 tournament. The Proteas squad selection process has been unusually complex, starting with a limited group of 12 players before expanding later in the week.
Coetzee, who was seen as a likely replacement for Anrich Nortje in the Proteas' Champions Trophy squad, completed 10 overs of training in Pretoria on Wednesday but experienced renewed hamstring discomfort, prompting his withdrawal as a precautionary measure. Cricket South Africa confirmed that a replacement would be announced shortly. The tri-nation series kicks off on February 10th with a match against New Zealand, followed by a clash against Pakistan two days later. South Africa will then face Pakistan again on February 12th in their final warm-up game before the Champions Trophy. The Proteas selectors have opted for a smaller 12-player squad, captained by Temba Bavuma, for the tri-nation series, featuring several players who will not be part of the Champions Trophy. Notably, uncapped ODI players like Matthew Breetzke, Meeka-eel Prince, Gideon Peters, Eathan Bosch, Senuran Muthusamy, and Mihlali Mpongwana have been included but are not in the Champions Trophy squad. The tri-nation squad will be bolstered after the SA20 Eliminator later on Wednesday. Meanwhile, players selected for the Champions Trophy who are not participating in the tri-nation series will depart for the tournament on February 14th
