City of Liverpool FC are optimistic despite agonising defeats to local rivals
Paul Manning, 56, from Huyton , is the chairman and one of the founders of the City of Liverpool FC. The club was formed after a desire to establish an affordable, grassroots club connected to the city, but they have often not had the chance to actually play home games in the city boundaries.
“We were worried locals were being priced out and denied tickets. We looked at it and thought, we can make an alternative that’s fair. They settled on the name of City of Liverpool FC and decided to make purple the club colour, due to it being the civic colour of the city and a mixture of red and blue.
Nevertheless, The Purps came close to incredible success. Paul said: “We were looking, unbelievably, at three promotions in eight seasons. We got to the third of the FA trophy and were knocked out by Hartlepool who are in League Two. Despite this disappointment, which also included a cup final defeat to fellow local rivals Marine in the Liverpool Senior Cup, Paul argues the club’s achievement shouldn’t be overlooked.
Meanwhile, City of Liverpool took 700 to its play-off final against Prescot Cables. It has also developed a committed set of fans, with the Ye Cracke pub a popular meeting point after games.
